Reddit Shuts Down Pro-Trump Group for Hate Speech

Reddit Shuts Down Pro-Trump Group for Hate Speech

A pro-Trump forum on Reddit, known as “The_Donald,” has been banned for repeatedly violating  hate speech rules, according to CBS News.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said this week he would be changing the company’s content policies and shut down forums, similar to it, that promote hate with 2,000 subreddits, mostly inactive ones, being taken off the site.

The_Donald had an average of around 7,800 daily users.

“All communities on Reddit must abide by our content policy in good faith,” Huffman said.”We banned r/The_Donald because it has not done so, despite every opportunity.”

He accused the forum of using speech that “antagonized” the company and other communities. Despite this, the moderators declined to meet Reddit’s basic rules.

The subreddit was “quarantined” by Reddit administrators last year due to its violation of Reddit’s content policy by threatening violence against police and public officials, according to CNET. When a subreddit is quarantined, it means users can still view and comment on it, but there is a warning to prevent anyone accidentally being able to view it.

Huffman said the company had tried to work with the The_Donald forum in advance of the most recent decision by warning them and using mod changes as well.

Many social media companies are facing challenges these days dealing with free speech in light of President Trump’s often controversial statements. Both Facebook and Twitter are now labeling rule-breaking content.
