Democratic National Convention Kicks Off Online

Democratic National Convention Kicks Off Online

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Democratic National Convention will no longer go according to plan with a large in-person convention in Milwaukee. Instead, it kicks off today with a two-hour virtual event that will have a theme of unity, according to CNN. All the scheduled speakers will give their speeches from different locations nationwide.

Among those who are expected to speak at the four-night event include former first lady Michelle Obama. Others who are scheduled to speak are: Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican and Ohio Gov. John Kasich. He is also a former presidential candidate and a symbol of the kind of anti-Trump Republican Biden hopes to win over in November.

Plenty of celebrities are also scheduled to perform, including singer Carole King, while others will emcee, including actresses Tracee Ellis Ross and Eva Longoria. Some will host virtual fundraisers at the same time. Shonda Rhimes, Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon and philanthropist Wallis Annenberg are among them, according to Variety.

The convention’s main hubs will be on stages set up in Los Angeles, New York, Milwaukee and Wilmington, Delaware, where Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, plan to deliver their speeches later this week.
