Kanye West is Off the Wisconsin Election Ballot

Rapper Kanye West has been gathering signatures in an attempt to get on the presidential ballot in some states after announcing his bid last month for the presidency, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, election officials in Wisconsin, one of the key battleground states, now say West will not appear on their state’s ballot because his campaign turned in his nomination after the 5 p.m. deadline on Aug. 4, according to CNN.

Democrats say Republicans are behind trying to put West on ballots in some swing states this November in order to take Black votes away from Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. President Donald Trump narrowly won Wisconsin four years ago. Some Wisconsin Republicans say local Democrats just want to fight to keep West from running in their state.

“The left wants to clear any liberal competition for Democrats, while ensuring a Libertarian is on the ballot to siphon votes from Republicans,” Mark Jefferson, executive director of the Wisconsin Republican Party, said. “Democrats are only interested in voter enfranchisement if they believe they will benefit. If they don’t benefit, they don’t care.”

However, Democrats say there was no hypocrisy in the decision which was made by a bipartisan election commission.

“I do not think it’s unreasonable to expect people who are seeking higher office to do something as simple as walk through a door before 5 o’clock at night, which is the deadline,” Ann Jacobs, chair of the Wisconsin Elections Commission and a Democrat, said.
