States File New Lawsuit Against Postal Service Changes

New York filed a new federal lawsuit against changes that the U.S. Postal Service has made in advance of the election, according to CNN. Hawaii, New Jersey, New York City and the City and County of San Francisco have also joined the lawsuit which was filed Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

“This USPS slowdown is nothing more than a voter suppression tactic,” New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, said in a statement. “Yet, this time, these authoritarian actions are not only jeopardizing our democracy and fundamental right to vote, but the immediate health and financial well-being of Americans across the nation.”

The court is being asked to declare the Postal Service changes are unconstitutional, according to ABC News. The lawsuit also aims to block any major nationwide changes being imposed by the Postal Service without first getting an opinion from the Postal Regulatory Commission.

The suit marks the third lawsuit filed by a state against the Postal Service. Recent changes to the Postal Service have interrupted mail delivery nationwide. The lawsuit also cites testimony that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and former vice chairman of the USPS Board of Governors, David Williams, made before Congress. Williams, who has resigned from his position, testified that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin directly interfered with the Postal Service’s operations. However, DeJoy said in his testimony that he does not plan to return collection boxes he had removed or any mail sorting equipment that was taken out of mail processing facilities.
