NBA, WNBA Games Postponed After Players Protest Jacob Blake Shooting

The NBA decided to postpone all three playoff games scheduled for Wednesday night after the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take to the court for Game 5 against the Orlando Magic to protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake, according to ESPN. The NBA proceeded to postpone all three playoff games after other NBA teams followed in their lead. It is now unclear whether the abbreviated season will continue.

“Over the last few days in our home state of Wisconsin, we’ve seen the horrendous video of Jacob Blake being shot in the back seven times by a police officer in Kenosha, and the additional shooting of protestors,” the Milwaukee Bucks said in a statement. “Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action, so our focus today cannot be on basketball.”

The players went on to demand Wisconsin lawmakers meet to address the issue. Blake, a Black man, was shot seven times around 40 miles from Milwaukee, on Sunday. Video of the police shooting, which took place with Blake’s three children nearby, went viral. Blake is now paralyzed from the waist down. The Orlando Magic said it also supported the decision not to play, according to ABC News.

Alex Lasry, a Bucks senior vice president, said he was proud of the team and supports the players. The decision about whether to postpone Thursday’s night’s three games as well as any future games is now being discussed. The NBA has scheduled a special board of governors meeting on Thursday.
