Book Publishing Powerhouse Dawn Davis to Head Bon Appétit

Dawn Davis, a vice president at Simon & Schuster, has just been picked to be the new editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit Magazine which has been marred by accusations of racism and pay inequality in recent months, according to Eater

“I want this to be a cultural magazine where the primary culture is food, but not something that’s in a vacuum, and I hope it’s fun,” Davis said.

Davis is one of only a handful of Black executives at major publishing houses. At Simon & Schuster, she founded the imprint, 37Ink, which publishes authors from “marginalized communities.” She is also the former publisher of Amistad Press, an imprint at HarperCollins that focused on diverse voices.

The former editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit, Adam Rapoport, left the job in early June after a writer, Tammie Teclemariam, posted a photo of Rapoport and his wife on Twitter making fun of Puerto Ricans at a Halloween party. However, Rapoport later denied wearing brownface at the party. Many prominent staff members at the magazine supported his resignation but other staff members also later resigned. The magazine’s only two Black editorial staff members also recently gave notice.

The magazine apologized two months ago and said it was “prioritizing people of color for the editor in chief candidate pool, implementing anti-racism training for our staff, and resolving any pay inequities that are found across all departments.” Davis is set to take the helm of the magazine on November 2, according to The Washington Post
