NBA Will Resume Playoffs on Saturday with New Initiatives

NBA Will Resume Playoffs on Saturday with New Initiatives

After walking off the court earlier this week, NBA players are now scheduled to resume their playoffs tomorrow, according to CBS Sports. The Milwaukee Bucks were the first team to leave the court on Wednesday, which led to a ripple effect among the other teams, as a way to protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The National Basketball Players Association and NBA officials now say they will work together on initiatives to combat social injustice and racial inequality, according to ESPN.

“These commitments follow months of close collaboration around designing a safe and healthy environment to restart the NBA season, providing a platform to promote social justice, as well as creating an NBA Foundation focused on economic empowerment in the Black community,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver and NBPA executive director Michele Roberts said in a joint statement. “We look forward to the resumption of the playoffs and continuing to work together — in Orlando and in all NBA team markets — to push for meaningful and sustainable change.”

The initiatives include establishing a social justice coalition consisting of players, coaches, and governors that will help improve voting access by working with local officials to convert NBA arenas into voting locations for the 2020 presidential election. The coalition will also advocate for “meaningful police and criminal justice reform.”

In addition, the NBA agreed to work with the players and businesses to create advertising that will appear during playoff games to promote voting and raise awareness about voting access.
