Twitter Will Label or Hide Tweets That Aim to Undercut the Election

Twitter has announced a new policy just in time for the presidential election to label or remove tweets containing false information that intend to undermine confidence in the election process, according to CNBC. These tweets will include any misleading information about election officials or other election-related laws.

“We will not permit our service to be abused around civic processes, most importantly elections,” company officials said, according to CNN. “Any attempt to do so — both foreign and domestic — will be met with strict enforcement of our rules, which are applied equally and judiciously for everyone.”

Impacted tweets will also include unverified information about election rigging, vote tallying, or election results. This includes anything where candidates claim to have won their elections before all of the election results are tallied or verified. Tweets provoking unlawful conduct that could hamper a peaceful transfer of power will also be affected.

Twitter officials say the policy will be “applied equally and judiciously for everyone.” President Trump has created doubts about the election and claimed on social media, without evidence, that mail-in ballots will lead to voter fraud. He has also asked voters to illegally vote twice. Twitter began fact checking some of Trump’s tweets earlier this year. As a result, he signed an executive order targeting social media and tried to get lawmakers to pass more strict Internet laws. Twitter’s new policy is expected to go into effect next week.
