Zendaya, Schitt’s Creek Make Emmy History

Zendaya, Schitt’s Creek Make Emmy History

This year’s Emmy Awards were held last night and made history for being the first ever virtual ceremony held in light of the coronavirus pandemic, but the virtual Zoom-like format wasn’t the exciting part of the night.

“Schitt’s Creek” made history for sweeping all the major Emmy comedy categories, according to Variety. The Canadian PopTV show, which had a second run on Netflix, took home nine Emmy Awards. Additionally, Actress Zendaya, 24, became the youngest drama actress winner Sunday night for her starring role on HBO’s “Euphoria,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“This feels like a really weird time to be celebrating,” Zendaya said. “There’s hope in the young people out there.”

HBO’s limited series, “Watchman,” won a total of 11 awards, more than any other show this year. It scored awards that included outstanding limited series, best limited series actress for Regina King, limited supporting actor for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and writing for a limited series or movie. The network’s fan favorite drama “Succession” also scored big, winning best drama, drama actor, for Jeremy Strong, writing for a drama and directing for a drama. Mark Ruffalo, star of HBO’s “I Know This Much is True,” won for lead actor in a limited series.

Disney Plus, scored eight Emmys in its first year of eligibility, all of which were during the Creative Arts ceremonies held last week, including seven for the hit show, “The Mandalorian.”
