Trump Refuses to Commit to Peaceful Power Transfer If He Loses Election

In the event President Trump loses the Nov. election, he now says he will not commit to a peaceful transfer of power to Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, according to CNBC.

“Well, we’ll have to see what happens,” Trump said in response to a reporter’s question at a press conference at the White House. “You know that. I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots. And the ballots are a disaster.”

Trump appeared to be referring to mail-in ballots, which he continues to criticize. He has said they can lead to voter fraud, although he has no evidence to support the claim. However, after Trump refused to commit to leave the White House peacefully, the Trump campaign later defended his remarks. Spokesman Tim Murtaugh said it is natural Trump would offer such a response since the question, itself, “assumed that he would lose” which Trump disagrees with because he does not see that there will be a need for a change in the administration.

Trump later added what he meant was that if he were to lose, he would wait until the Supreme Court ruled on the election if their involvement were to become necessary, according to CNN. The campaign for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden also offered its own response to Trump not willing to leave office peacefully.

“The American people will decide this election,” a Biden campaign spokesperson said. “And the United States government is perfectly capable of escorting trespassers out of the White House.”

His comments continue to raise concerns about the now-empty Supreme Court seat left by Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death last week.
