The Los Angeles Lakers, led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, won their 17th championship playing against the Miami Heat, according to CNN. It is James’s fourth NBA victory and the team is now now tied with the Boston Celtics for the most championships in NBA history.

This year’s game, won in a 106-93 victory, was played under unusual circumstances in a bubble near Orlando after the season was paused in mid-March due to the pandemic. James, who was named the 2020 NBA Finals MVP, helped lead the Lakers to their first championship in a decade, according to ESPN.  The last Lakers championship was won while Kobe Bryant, who died in a plane crash along with his daughter, Gianna, and seven other people in January, was still leading the team.

“Ever since the tragedy, all we wanted to do was do it for him,” Davis said, according to CBS Sports. “We didn’t let him down. It would’ve been great to do it last game in his jerseys, but it made us come out even more aggressive, even more powerful on both ends of the floor to make sure we closed it out tonight. I know he’s looking down on us proud of us. I know Vanessa’s proud of us, the organization’s proud of us. It means a lot to us. It’s a tough moment, man. He was a big brother to all of us.”

“Kobe Bryant” chants broke out in downtown Los Angeles as fans showed up at Staples Center in droves to celebrate the title, although they were discouraged from gathering due to the Coronavirus.
