Britney Spears Wins a Victory in Conservatorship Case

Britney Spears Wins a Victory in Conservatorship Case

Britney Spears won a small victory in court yesterday in her conservatorship battle against her father, Jamie Spears, according to Variety. A petition request was granted that will allow her to expand her legal team.

“Britney strongly believes it is consistent not only with her personal best interests but also with good public policy generally that the decision to appoint a new conservator of her estate be made in as open and transparent a manner as possible,” Judge Samuel Ingham wrote.

Spears is seeking to have Jamie removed from her conservatorship that has been in effect for 12 years. Spears was not in court, but her mother, Lynne Spears; Jamie; and her attorney, were. Jamie Spears had opposed the petition, claiming it would be too expensive to add more lawyers. Her father has been her co-conservator since 2008 when she suffered from a public breakdown and he became sole conservator last year after attorney Andrew Wallet resigned from his co-conservatorship.

Jamie Spears is now recovering from treatment for a ruptured colon. As a result, Spears postponed her Las Vegas residency, then later checked herself into a health facility for a month. The conservatorship battle has sparked a #FreeBritney movement, according to Forbes. Fans have gathered outside the court hearings for years and pointed out what they say are the singer’s secret calls for help in her social media posts.
