Senate Likely to Confirm Supreme Court Nominee Amy Coney Barrett Today

Judge Amy Coney Barrett, whose hurried nomination to the Supreme Court has been highly debated, is expected to be confirmed by the Senate today, according to CNBC. Senate Republicans voted to end debate over her nomination on Sunday afternoon, thwarting efforts by Senate Democrats who worked hard to delay the process, according to Vox.

Barrett, who is a federal appeals court judge on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was nominated by President Trump to fill Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat shortly after Ginsburg died last month. The Senate vote on Sunday, of 51-48, was mostly divided by party lines.

Democrats have been against filling Ginsburg’s seat now given the fact the presidential election is so close, and they would prefer the next president be able to choose a nominee. Many people have concerns about Barrett’s stance on Roe v. Wade as well. Democrats also pointed out Senate Republicans blocked President Obama’s last Supreme Court nominee from being confirmed eight months before the 2016 election, as they said it fell too close to the election.

Trump is anxious to quickly seat Barrett in case she is needed to weigh in on any legal action that could arise after the November election against Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Sunday’s Senate vote “a travesty.”
