The Weeknd, Roddy Ricch Earn Most American Music Award Nominations

The Weeknd and rapper Roddy Ricch received eight nods each for the 2020 American Music Awards, according to Variety. That includes for the awards’ biggest prize: “Artist of the Year.” In that category, Roddy Ricch and The Weeknd will compete against Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and Post Malone. Swift holds the record for the most wins in that category with five, as well as the record for the most American Music Award wins of all time with 29.

The nominations are based on the Billboard charts and include streaming, album and digital song sales, and radio. The Weeknd will also compete against Roddy Ricch for “Favorite Song – Pop/Rock.” In addition to being nominated for “Artist of the Year,” Ricch is nominated for “New Artist of the Year,” “Collaboration of the Year,” “Favorite Male Artist – Pop/Rock” and “Favorite Song – Rap/Hip-hop.”

Rapper and first-time nominee Megan Thee Stallion is the most nominated female artist this year with five nominations, including for “Collaboration of the Year” and “New Artist of the Year.” Taylor Swift garnered a total of four nominations and Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Bad Bunny, DaBaby, and Doja Cat also scored four nods each, according to The Hollywood Reporter. John Legend is nominated in the “Favorite Male Artist – Soul/R&B” category.

Dua Lipa, who announced the nominations on “Good Morning America” today, is nominated for “Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock” and “Favorite Song – Pop/Rock.” The show will air live on ABC from Los Angeles on Sunday, November 22.
