Early Voting Hits Record Numbers

Early Voting Hits Record Numbers

With the presidential election less than a week away, Americans are voting in droves and beating past trends in the process, according to CNN. More than 68.5 million people have already voted, according to a survey of election officials in 50 states and in Washington, D.C.

The number of ballots cast is over half of those tallied in the 2016 presidential election. This is in spire of the fact many are leery about in-person voting due to the pandemic, causing millions to opt for voting by mail or voting early.

American citizens who live overseas are also expected to participate in record numbers, according to Vice. Massachusetts, for example, is reporting a 60 percent increase compared to four years ago. There were 16,946 ballots requested this year as compared to 10,513 requests in 2016. In addition, there were just 6,225 ballots requested there eight years ago.

“This year, the number of overseas voters is even greater, with many voters contacting us who have never before voted in an American election,” Debra O’Malley, spokeswoman for Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin’s office.

Iowa has also seen a 40 percent jump in early voter turnout for Americans in foreign countries. The state of Colorado has reported a 50 percent increase in voter registration for Americans overseas compared to the last presidential election. Eighteen states have also crossed their halfway total numbers for the ballots cast four years ago. This includes the battleground states of Texas, Georgia, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Colorado and Nevada.
