Early Voter Turnout Already Beats 2016 Record in Some States

As polls opened nationwide today, some states have already surpassed their 2016 voter turnouts, according to CNN. Those states include North Carolina, Florida, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Georgia, according to Vox. All of them have surpassed total voting numbers four years ago by more than 90 percent.

Early voting in Texas this year is more than 108 percent of 2016’s total vote count. Hawaii has also seen higher numbers with early voting representing more than 110 percent of the state’s total record four years ago.

However, election officials are warning the actual results of this year’s election will take some time to be tallied, so many are asking for voters to be patient this time around.

“Vote counting is never finished on Election Day and if we stop counting ballots on Election Day, we will be disenfranchising all the men and women who serve our country, all the military and civilian overseas voters whose ballots by law must be accepted up to seven days after the election,” Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar said.

More than 100 million votes have been cast before today nationwide. Election officials say voters who have tested positive for the Coronavirus or who have been exposed to it will still be allowed to vote in person today, according to the CDC.
