Facebook and Twitter Crack Down on Violent Election-Related Posts

Facebook and Twitter are removing posts by pro-Trump groups calling for possible actions of aggression in light of the election results, according to Reuters. On Facebook, there was a “Stop the Steal” group that supported President Trump and appealed to its group members to implement “boots on the ground to protect the integrity of the vote.”

The group formed Wednesday before it was banned yesterday, according to The New York Times. The organization was adding 1,000 new members every 10 seconds and had reached up to 365,000 members.

Group organizers claimed they are a peaceful organization and complained Facebook did not warn them in advance of shutting them down. However, Facebook officials say they are banning its members as part of an effort to not spread misinformation about the election and to quell rising tensions.

“The group was organized around the delegitimization of the election process, and we saw worrying calls for violence from some members,” a Facebook spokeswoman said.

The group formed after Trump posted on Facebook and Twitter, without any evidence, that “they are trying to STEAL the Election.” Twitter has also been cracking down on the spread of election misinformation by putting 11 out of 32 of Trump’s tweets since Tuesday behind a warning label, indicating they are disputed.

Twitter also suspended an account by Steve Bannon, Trump’s ex-campaign manager, that showed a video of him calling for infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci to be beheaded as well as FBI Director Christopher Wray for not being loyal to Trump.
