Joe Biden Defeats Donald Trump and Wins the Presidency

Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden became President-elect Biden over the weekend after Pennsylvania put him over the top, according to CNN. Biden won the state’s 20 electoral votes on Saturday, surpassing the 270 required to win, according to CBS News. He now has 279 compared to Trump’s 214 electoral votes.

World leaders and a few Republicans have congratulated him, including Senator Mitt Romney, R-Utah, who encouraged all Americans to support Biden. Former President George W. Bush called Biden to extend his best wishes and called the race “fundamentally fair,” according to CNN. Trump has not conceded and plans to take the race to courts. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has yet to congratulate Biden.

People in cities across the country took to the streets to celebrate, honking horns, banging pots and pans, singing, and cheering. Philadelphia, which was a key city for Pennsylvania, saw people pouring into downtown with banners. Trump was golfing then the news broke.

Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, appeared together in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday where they gave victory speeches.

“I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide, but to unify — who doesn’t see red and blue states, but a United States,” Biden said, according to The New York Times. “And who will work with all my heart to win the confidence of the whole people.”

Biden is only the fifth presidential candidate to beat an incumbent president over the past 100 years, according to Vice. Harris is also making history as she will be the first woman, first African American and first South Asian person to serve as vice president. Biden plans to announce his Coronavirus task force on Monday.
