A First, All Artists for Best Rock Grammy are Women

A First, All Artists for Best Rock Grammy are Women

The Grammy nominations were announced this afternoon, and for the first time in their history, all the artist nominees for Best Rock Performance are women (or a female-fronted group). The Grammys have been criticized over the years for primarily nominating men, especially in rock and alternative categories.

The nominees are as follows:

Fiona Apple – ‘Shameika’

Big Thief – ‘Not’

Phoebe Bridgers – ‘Kyoto’

HAIM – ‘The Steps’

Brittany Howard – ‘Stay High’

Grace Potter – ‘Daylight’

Brittany Howard was nominated in this category last year and her band Alabama Shakes won the award in 2016 for their song “Don’t Wanna Fight,” which was the last time a woman took home a win. Gary Clark Jr.’s song “This Land” won this past year.

Big Thief, Fiona Apple, and Phoebe Bridgers are also nominated for Best Rock Song and Howard, Bridgers, and Apple are also all nominated for Best Alternative Music Album. This is Phoebe Bridgers’s first time nominated and she’s also up for Best New Artist.

While the music industry looks drastically different this year from the lack of live events due to the pandemic, artists still were able to produce great bodies of work and the Recording Academy was keen on recognizing contributions outside their typical male-dominated scope.

The full list of nominations can be viewed on the Grammy website and the 2021 Grammy Awards will air on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. EST.
