‘Juno’ and ‘Umbrella Academy’ Star Elliot Page Announces He is Transgender

Elliot Page, the well-known actor who is a former Oscar nominee and has starred in films including “Juno” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” shared with fans via social media that he is transgender. Elliot uses both he/him and they/them pronouns and is transgender and nonbinary, according to Variety.

“I feel lucky to be writing this,” Page posted on Twitter and Instagram. “To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”

Page added that many in the trans community have served as a source of inspiration. A native of Canada, Page most recently starred in Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy.” Their first breakout role was 15 years ago with the revenge thriller “Hard Candy.” Page’s starring role in Diablo Cody’s “Juno,” for which he received an Academy Award nomination, was a couple of years later. Page’s other well-known roles are as Kitty Pryde in the “X-Men” series, “Inception,” “Whip It!” and “Flatliners.” Page also produced and starred in “Tallulah” and “Freeheld.”

Page branched out into directing last year with a film that looked at how the First Nations communities of Canada and people of color are faced with environmental racism. Elliot was one of the most notable out gay actors in Hollywood prior to this announcement, and now he joins the growing number of out trans celebrities in Hollywood, further solidifying their impact.

GLAAD’s director of Transgender Media Nick Adams said in a statement via Variety:

“Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on-screen, and has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people. He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people. All transgender people deserve the chance to be ourselves and to be accepted for who we are. We celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page today.”
