Google Employees Announce Plans to Unionize

In light of ongoing disagreements with executives at Google, more than 200 Google workers have joined forces to form a union, according to CNBC. The new Alphabet Workers Union is designed for all workers and contractors of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, according to The Verge.

“This union builds upon years of courageous organizing by Google workers,” Nicki Anselmo, a Google program manager, said. “From fighting the ‘real names’ policy, to opposing Project Maven, to protesting the egregious, multi-million dollar payouts that have been given to executives who’ve committed sexual harassment, we’ve seen firsthand that Alphabet responds when we act collectively.”

Project Maven used AI to improve drone strikes. Many employees protested the project and said it was immoral. Google workers have been at odds with Google executives over the past few years. Employees wrote Google CEO Sundar Pichai two years ago requesting that he cease a partnership with the Pentagon, which the company did.

Contractors at Google have also protested the fact that they do not believe they are treated fairly. They also do not receive benefits as the company’s full-time employees do.

In addition, employees have taken issue with the way Google executives treat minority groups. Some employees recently protested the firing of Google AI researcher Timnnit Gebru. She said she was let go after a disagreement over a research paper.

Kara Silverstein, director of people operations at Google, said the company has tried to “create a supportive and rewarding workplace.” She added that the company will continue to hold discussions with employees.
