Pro-Trump Mob Breaches Capitol Building

Protesters carrying a mix of Confederate and American flags besieged the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Wednesday, with four dying in the melee, according to NBC News. The rioters were protesting the certification of the electoral college, sealing President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

Congressional lawmakers were barricaded in the Capitol as Trump supporters broke glass and rammed their way inside.

A Trump supporter sat in the seat on the Senate floor where Vice President Mike Pence had just sat minutes before. He was taken to a secure location. There was also a noose hung near the Capitol.

Two explosive devices were found and detonated without any injuries, according to the FBI.

A San Diego woman was killed inside the Capitol, according to NBC7. Three other people died as a result of “medical emergencies,” according to officials. Trump tweeted at the protestors for hours before finally releasing a video first praising them while also telling them to “go home.”

Former President Obama referred to the riot as “a moment of great dishonor and shame for our nation.” Other politicians also criticized it.

Congress later reconvened. Several Republicans then said they would no longer issue a challenge to Biden’s victory, according to CNN. They included Senators Kelly Loeffler from Georgia, James Lankford from Oklahoma, Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee, Steve Daines from Montana, Mike Braun from Indiana and Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers from Washington.

Only 52 people were arrested in the chaos, primarily for curfew violations, a stark contrast to the nearly 14,000 arrests made this summer during Black Lives Matter protests across cities, according to Forbes.
