Trump’s Social Media Accounts Locked While Congress Certifies Biden’s Win

Trump’s Social Media Accounts Locked While Congress Certifies Biden’s Win

Despite President Trump Twitter incited his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol, which caused a riot that left four dead, Congress was still able to successfully certify President-elect Joe Biden’s election win, according to BoingBoing. Biden’s final tally was 306 electoral votes compared to 232 for Trump.

As a result of the riot, however, Facebook blocked Trump from using its sites, including Instagram, until at least Biden’s inauguration on January 20, according to Time. Facebook officials blame Trump’s online rhetoric for fueling the rampage.

“We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great,”  Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post this morning. “Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”

Trump also posted a video on social media yesterday, which Twitter later removed along with two of his other tweets, that coaxed his followers. Twitter officials said the video posed a “risk of violence.”

Trump’s Twitter account was locked for 12 hours Wednesday evening and he was warned of a possible permanent suspension. However, Trump has since deleted the tweets in question; therefore, Twitter may unlock his account this afternoon.

Shopify, an e-commerce platform, has closed websites on its site that were affiliated with Trump because they violated its internal policies, according to CNBC. Shopify officials said they do not condone “actions that incite violence.”
