House Presents Articles of Impeachment Against Trump

The House of Representatives introduced its articles of impeachment — for a second time — against President Donald Trump this morning for the “incitement of insurrection” in last week’s riots at the US Capitol, according to CNN.

The articles point out Trump’s telephone call to Georgia’s Republican secretary of state instructing him to “find” the votes to make it possible for Trump to win Georgia. They also cite the 14th Amendment which preclude anyone from holding office who has been involved in “insurrection or rebellion against the United States.”

“In all this, President Trump gravely endangered the security of the United States and its institutions of Government,” the resolution states. “He threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch of Government. He thereby betrayed his trust as President, to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.”

House Democrats also attempted to introduce a resolution requesting that Vice President Mike Pence invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. However, it was objected by House Republicans, many of whom do not want Trump impeached.

Trump could become the only president in history to be impeached twice. Democrats expect the impeachment vote to take place Wednesday.

The resolution now has more than 200 co-sponsors, consisting of nearly all of the Democratic lawmakers, according to Representative David Cicilline of Rhode Island. The Senate is not scheduled to meet until Jan. 19, according to BoingBoing. An impeachment trial could spill over into the beginning of President-elect Joe Biden’s presidency.
