House of Representatives Votes to Impeach Trump (Again)

House of Representatives Votes to Impeach Trump (Again)

President Donald Trump is now the first president of the United States to be impeached twice after the House of Representatives voted Wednesday to impeach him for inciting insurrection, according to CNN. Ten Republicans broke with their party to cast their votes in favor of the impeachment.

The vote was 232 to 197, according to Reuters. Some Democrats spoke out saying Trump had attempted to cause a “coup” and must be stopped.

“The president of the United States incited this insurrection, this armed rebellion against our common country,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, said before the House vote. “He must go. He is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love.”

However, some Republicans argued attempting to impeach Trump would be the wrong thing to do. Doing so in such “a short time frame would be a mistake,” according to Kevin McCarthy, the House’s top Republican. Others Republicans accused Democrats — who are, in fact, politicians — of “playing politics.”

Another Republican, Jamie Herrera Beutler, who voted in favor of the impeachment said she was simply “choosing truth” and not one side or the other.

The articles of impeachment will now have to go to the Senate where a trial will take place. The Senate has the option to convict or acquit Trump of charges and dish out a punishment. However, they are not scheduled to return from their current recess until January 19.

The trial will still take place even after Trump leaves office. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Republicans in a memo that he has not made a final decision regarding how he will vote on the impeachment.
