Joe Biden was officially inaugurated as the 46th president today and Kamala Harris as vice-president. The inauguration looked unlike any other in recent history due to the increased security due to the Capitol riots a couple weeks ago and lack of large crowds because of the pandemic, but per tradition, the ceremony went smoothly.

“Today we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate, but of a cause: the cause of democracy. The people — the will of the people has been heard, and the will of the people has been heeded,” Biden said in his inauguration speech, according to NPR. “To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: Unity.”

The ceremony was, in fact, a moment of unity with former President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton in attendance. Trump, however, left the city earlier in the morning and was not there.

Vice President Kamala Harris was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, according to CNN. Biden was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts. Despite the recent insurrection at the Capitol, Biden and Harris were adamant about not moving the inauguration’s location. Harris said last week “we cannot yield to those who would try and make us afraid of who we are.”

Lady Gaga dazzled the crowd and with a performance of the National Anthem. Jennifer Lopez was also in attendance and sang “This Land Is Your Land,” according to CNN. Garth Brooks led the crowd in singing “Amazing Grace.”

After the ceremony, Biden and Harris are scheduled to visit Arlington National Cemetery to pay their respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They will be accompanied by all of the former presidents. John Legend and Katy Perry are scheduled to perform at tonight’s “Celebrating America” primetime television special.
