Chadwick Boseman Makes History with 4 SAG Award Nominations

The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were announced Thursday, and the late Chadwick Boseman broke a record with four nominations, according to Variety. No other actor has ever received that number of movie award nominations in one year, according to Deadline.

He was nominated for a leading role in Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” a supporting role in “Da 5 Bloods,” and received two other nods as a cast member in both films. Boseman died of colon cancer last August at the age of 43. He was also a Best Actor nominee at the IFP Gotham Awards and received the Actor Tribute Award.

“As an artist, an actor and a person, Chad made a practice of telling the truth,” his wife, Simone Ledward, said, according to Yahoo News. “He is the most honest person I’ve ever met. Because he didn’t just stop at speaking the truth, he actively searched for it—in himself, in those around him and in the moment.”

There are some other heavy hitters competing against Boseman in the leading actor category. They include: Riz Ahmed for “Sound of Metal,” Anthony Hopkins for “The Father,” Gary Oldman for “Mank,” and Steven Yeun for “Minari.”

Unlike most awards, SAG does not give out an award for the best film of the year. Instead, SAG awards the best ensemble. The best motion picture ensemble nominations include: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Minari,” “One Night in Miami,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Da 5 Bloods.” Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs announced this year’s nominees.
