Trump Acquitted in Impeachment Trial, Again

The Senate voted to acquit former President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial for inciting insurrection, according to BoingBoing. While the vote came to a 57-43 majority, the tally was short of the 67 votes actually required for conviction.

Only seven Republicans voted in favor of conviction during Saturday’s vote. While no witnesses were called, House Impeachment managers say they have no regrets about not doing so, according to NPR.

“We left it totally out there on the floor of the U.S. Senate, and every senator knew exactly what happened,” lead House impeachment manager Jamie Raskin, D-Maryland, said.  “We could have had a thousand witnesses but that could not have overcome the kinds of silly arguments that people like McConnell and Capito were hanging their hats on.”

House Delegate Stacey Plaskett, D-Virgin Islands, added “what we needed were senators, more senators with spines, not more witnesses.” However, the impeachment managers were able to add in a statement from U.S. Representative Herrera Beutler, R-Washington’s Third District, in which she described hearing a heated telephone conversation between House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Trump during the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

The impeachment verdict was the most bipartisan one in United States history. Senator Bill Cassidy, R-Louisiana, was one of the Republicans who voted in favor of it, and said he voted to convict Trump because Americans prefer that their leaders be responsible for their actions. Before the vote went to the Senate, 10 Republican House members had also voted in favor of the impeachment.
