Texas to Receive Federal Aid for Historic Winter Storm Damage

Texas to Receive Federal Aid for Historic Winter Storm Damage

President Biden approved a major disaster declaration in Texas on Saturday, according to NPR. Over the past week, millions have been without electricity and water in the aftermath of a major snowstorm that wreaked havoc statewide.

Biden plans to visit Texas this week. His emergency declaration will ensure federal funding for 77 counties. He is also working with Republican Governor Greg Abbott to possibly include additional counties soon.

The declaration will give low-cost loans to help Texans who have no insurance receive coverage for property loss. The federal funds will also provide emergency assistance to repair their houses and for temporary shelter.

Local governments statewide will also receive federal money to help repair their infrastructures, according to CNBC. The power outages and freezing temperatures caused a drop in water pressure and the work of water treatment facilities to be interrupted. As a result, more than 15 million people in Texas were under boil water notices.

“This is great news for the people of Dallas after a horrible week,” Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson wrote in a tweet. “The damage caused by this storm is extensive, and the disaster declaration will help our city recover.”

The military has been delivering water and food by plane across the state while Texas utilities companies have worked to restore water service. State officials have also ordered 9.9 million water bottles. Other states, including Louisiana and Oklahoma, have already received emergency declarations from the federal government as well.
