Netflix Wins Big at Golden Globe Awards

Netflix Wins Big at Golden Globe Awards

Netflix ruled the night at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This year’s awards ceremony, hosted on both coasts by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, was overshadowed by controversies surrounding its governing body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which faces ethical questions after a recent Los Angeles Times investigation.

These include receiving favors such as being flown to Paris by Netflix in order to visit the set of “Emily in Paris.” The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has also received criticism for having no non-white members, according to The Verge.

“Thank you to the all-white Hollywood Foreign Press,” Sacha Baron Cohen said at the beginning of his acceptance speech for Best Comedy or Musical for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”

Netflix’s “The Crown” received four awards, the most of the night, including acting awards for Gillian Anderson, Emma Corrin, and Josh O’Conner and Best Drama. “The Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix also won for limited series and for actress Anya Taylor-Joy.

Andra Day received the award for Best Actress for her role in “The United States vs Billie Holiday,” becoming only the second Black woman to ever win Best Actress in a Drama at the Globes.

“Soul” on Disney Plus nabbed two awards, for Best Animated Picture and Best Original Score. In addition, John Boyega, who starred in “Small Axe” on Amazon and BBC, received the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for a Performance in a Limited Series.

Jason Sudeikis, the star of “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV+, won for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, while “Nomadland,” streaming on Hulu, won for Best Drama and for director Chloé Zhao, who is the first Asian woman to win in that category.
