Kings of Leon is the First Band to Release Album as NFT

Tennessee-based band Kings of Leon is making history with its newest project. When You See Yourself was released today as a non-fungible token, or NFT, making them the first band to release an album in this format, according to Rolling Stone.

Fans can purchase the album on the ticketing platform, YellowHeart, which is based on blockchain, according to Variety. It is available for $50, according to The Guardian. This album is the first time fans can purchase a release on blockchain the exact same day as it is released on streaming services.

“Over the last 20 years – two lost decades – we’ve seen the devaluation of music,” Josh Katz, CEO at YellowHeart, said. “It’s early stages, but in the future, I think this will be how people release their tracks. When they sell 100,000 at a dollar each, then they just made $100,000.”

YellowHeart will also be providing two additional crypto packages to fans. It is auctioning off six “golden tickets.”

They feature perks, including four front row tickets to a Kings of Leon show of the fan’s choosing and has no expiration date. Another prize is six different art pieces marking the album’s release and Kings of Leon’s achievements. That auction goes live at noon EST today.

However, the rock band’s album is also being released on Apple Music, Spotify, and other standard streaming services. It marks the band’s first album in four years, according to Yahoo News. The 11-track album was written and recorded before the beginning of the pandemic.
