Biden to Set Up White House Gender Policy Council

Biden to Set Up White House Gender Policy Council

President Joe Biden is signing an executive order to create a Gender Policy Council in the White House, which coincides with International Women’s Day, according to CBS News. It is one of two orders Biden is signing to support women’s rights both nationally and internationally, according to NPR.

First Lady Jill Biden’s chief of staff Julissa Reynoso will help lead the council, and Jennifer Klein will be its executive director. The Gender Policy Council will have a presence in domestic and foreign policy development.

The Department of Education, under a second executive order signed by Biden, will now review its current policies. That includes a Title IX regulation left over from former President Trump that guided how colleges handle sexual misconduct.

Biden’s executive order will “ensure consistency with the Biden-Harris Administration’s policy that students be guaranteed education free from sexual violence.” Biden said his executive orders will aid in women’s rights being entrenched in domestic and foreign policy going forward.

“Elevating the status of women and girls globally is the right thing to do — it is a matter of justice, fairness, and decency, and it will lead to a better, more secure, and more prosperous world for us all,” Biden said. “On International Women’s Day, let us recommit to the principle that our nation, and the world, is at its best when the possibilities for all of our women and girls are limitless.”

The Gender Policy Council is a continuation of former President Obama’s White House Council on Women and Girls, which was dismantled by Trump during his term.
