Apple Discontinues the Original HomePod

After four years, Apple is now discontinuing its original HomePod to focus on the HomePod Mini instead, according to TechCrunch. While the original HomePod will still be available while supplies last, the HomePod Mini has grown in popularity after first being introduced last year.

“We are discontinuing the original HomePod, it will continue to be available while supplies last through the Apple Online Store, Apple Retail Stores and Apple Authorized Resellers,” Apple executives said in a statement.

The HomePod Mini first went on the market in November and has been able to perform similarly to the larger HomePod model, offering great sound as well as the Apple assistant, Siri. The HomePod Mini is also much cheaper with a $99 price tag compared to $299 (originally $349), which was at the higher end when it comes to smart home speakers. Additionally, the HomePod mini has a better “edge-to-edge” touchscreen on top of it, according to Forbes.

The HomePod Mini’s speaker also has an intercom and can even send messages from the mini to any other Apple device, including AirPods. Apple also plans to add a feature that allows the HomePod Mini to be able to tell when a customer’s iPhone is nearby in order to quickly transfer music from the iPhone to the HomePod Mini.

Experts say the high price was a turn off for many consumers for the original model. However, Apple plans to continue to offer support and provide software updates for customers who still have the existing HomePod.
