President Biden Pushes for Gun Control After Mass Shooting in Colorado

In the wake of this week’s Colorado mass shooting that killed 10 people, President Joe Biden spoke out yesterday saying it is time for the Senate to pass a gun control law, according to NPR. He added that Monday’s shooting left him and First Lady Jill Biden “devastated.”

“I don’t need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take common-sense steps that will save lives in the future and to urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to act,” Biden said.

He added that among the guns that should be banned are assault weapons. There should also not be any loopholes when it comes to background checks, Biden said.

The House of Representatives passed a gun control bill earlier this month that requires background checks on every gun sale and transfer. However, passing the measure in the Senate is considered to be a long shot.

The bill also includes the “Charleston rule”, named after the 2015 shooting at a Charleston, South Carolina, church which killed nine people. The rule adds time to the review period for background checks, making it 20 days instead of three.

Biden also is not ruling out possibly taking executive action regarding gun control in light of current events, according to CNN. In addition, he said from the White House that it should not be a partisan dilemma, but “an American issue.” He ordered that flags be flown at half-staff through to this Saturday in memory of the victims in the Colorado shooting.
