Baylor Wins First NCAA Title

Baylor Wins First NCAA Title

Baylor dominated Gonzaga to win the NCAA men’s tournament, according to CBS News. The score was 86-70 and marked the first in NCAA Mens basketball title in Baylor university’s history.

Baylor’s Jared Butler scored 22 points outsmarting Gonzaga freshman Jalen Suggs who is himself a standout. Butler made 43 pointers and seven assists. They also dominated Gonzaga’s well-known offense. Gonzaga even had trouble getting their shots off.

“They just beat us. They beat us in every facet of the game tonight,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said, according to Yahoo Sports. “They deserve all the credit.”

Baylor overcame them with 16 offensive rebounds. The team had an undefeated start to the season, but their streak was interrupted when they had to pause for three weeks in February due to Covid-19.

Baylor finished the season 28-2. The team had other advantages over Gonzaga – Baylor played against 12 ranked teams before Monday night’s game, whereas Gonzaga had only faced six ranked teams.

Gonzaga attempted just 22 shots in the first half of the game compared to Baylor which made 19 out of 38 shots. Additionally, Gonzaga turned over the ball eight times. The team also simply could not reach Baylor’s energy level or speed.

Jared Butler also became the first player since Carmelo Anthony played for Syracuse 18 years ago to score 20 points.

It was truly a history-making year, since Baylor had not reached the Final Four since 1950. The team had not even played in a NCAA title game in 73 years.
