President Joe Biden announced today six new measures in a step toward enacting gun control as part of his effort to help prevent future deadly shooting sprees, according to CBS News.
“Gun violence in this country is an epidemic,” Biden said today in the Rose Garden. “And it’s an international embarrassment.”
Biden was interested in taking steps right away to address gun control after two recent deadly shootings took place in both Atlanta and Colorado. He aims, among other actions, to find ways to restrict the use of “ghost guns” and according to CNN.
The proposed rule would “stop the proliferation” of the guns, Biden said. The handmade ghost guns do not have serial numbers and can be made in half an hour using kits and material that is purchased over the internet.
White House officials say that Biden’s plans are merely an introduction, signaling that he plans to implement more action in the future. He also plans to urge lawmakers to take a stand and is also interested in banning assault weapons and is eyeing rules requiring universal background checks.
Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Justice Department will be in charge of drafting the new rules. Gun control advocates are applauding the news. However, the NRA, has wasted no time in criticizing Biden, calling the measures “extreme.”
