Police Shooting Rocks Minneapolis Suburb for a Second Night

Protests erupted throughout a Minneapolis, Minnesota, suburb for the second night in a row following the shooting death of a young Black man by police while he was detained, according to Reuters. The Brooklyn Center, Minnesota police chief said that the police officer accidentally fired her gun while attempting to taser 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a traffic stop.

He was killed on Sunday night, and while Minnesota Governor Tim Walz had since ordered a curfew, protesters braved pouring down rain and clashed with police officers in riot gear.

“My heart is broken in a thousand pieces… I miss him so much, and it’s only been a day,” Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, said yesterday. “He was my life, he was my son and I can never get that back. Because of a mistake? Because of an accident?”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew yesterday for the community around Minneapolis and St. Paul.

“Gwen and I are praying for Daunte Wright’s family as our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement,” Walz said in a statement, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Wright was murdered only 10 miles from the courthouse where the trial is now underway for former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, for the murder of George Floyd. Floyd died last May after Chauvin knelt on his neck for about nine minutes while Floyd was in police custody.
