Girl Scout Cookies to be Delivered by Drone in Virginia

Girl Scout Cookies to be Delivered by Drone in Virginia

If you want Girl Scout cookies in Christiansburg, Virginia, be prepared for them to be delivered by drone, according to the Associated Press. The town is testing a new delivery process spearheaded by the company Wing, which is a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google’s parent company.

Wing already delivers items from drug stores, as well as locally made food and FedEx packages via drone and began doing so two years ago. However, since Girl Scouts are having difficulty selling cookies as a result of lockdowns, the organization came up with the drone delivery idea. The organization discontinued selling cookies door to door in March of last year, according to USA TODAY.

“Even with loosening restrictions, the traditional method of selling cookies outside of grocery stores or shops is difficult this year, and sales are down about 50 percent from prior years,” Lia Reich, Wing global communications lead, said in a statement to USA TODAY. “It was a natural fit to partner with the Girl Scouts to help out in this situation.”

Local residents can order the Girl Scout cookies to be delivered by Wing between now and the end of May. The company says it will deliver 3,000 boxes of cookies.

However, if more need to be distributed, the company may sign on to do so. Girl Scouts also began selling cookies online this year through virtual cookie booths that they created on social media platforms.
