NBA Names Social Justice Award After Legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

The NBA has decided to honor Kareem Abdul-Jabbar by naming an award after the legendary NBA star, according to CBS News. The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Award will be given to an NBA player who supports social justice issues and illustrates the NBA’s “values of equality, respect and inclusion,” according to League officials.

They say naming an award after Abdul-Jabbar, who is a six-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer, is a natural fit. This is especially true given the work he has done since retiring from the NBA.

“In addition to being one of our greatest players, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has devoted much of his life to advocating for equality and social justice,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement, according to Sports Illustrated.

Each team will be able to nominate one player. A selection committee led by Abdul-Jabbar will meet on a yearly basis to choose the five finalists, according to NBA officials.

The winning NBA player will receive $100,000, which will be used to benefit any charity he chooses. The other four finalists will receive $25,000 each that will also be donated for a charity.

“I think this award will enable various guys on various teams to start thinking about what they can do to help things in their community,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “They can become activists, people who are leaders in their community.”

He said people who influenced him over the years included Muhammad Ali. The inaugural winner and finalists of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Award will be announced later this year.
