Shopify and Google Join Forces to Expand Online Shopping

Shopify’s stock soared after Google announced today that it is allowing Shopify customers to increase their presence on Google, according to CNBC. Google is now allowing customers to find Shopify’s 1.7 million businesses more easily on Google search and its other sites.

Google is calling the service “Shopping Graph,” according to TechCrunch. It will cull information from different websites as well as videos, price reviews and details about products from stores and brands to better inform shoppers about what they are buying.

“We believe you deserve the most choice available and we’ll continue to innovate on shopping every step of the way,” Bill Ready, president of commerce and payments at Google, said.

The way Shopping Graph works is that customers will now be able to look at screenshots of products they are interested in buying on Google Photos. They will then be able to search the photo using Google lens to find the item.

Google’s Chrome browser will now also show shopping carts, so that when people open new tabs, they can later easily go back to shopping. Google publicized earlier this year that it was testing a tool on YouTube that would allow shoppers to look for products recommended by their favorite creators.

This is being seen as Google’s way of competing with Facebook and TikTok. Shopify and Google are also collaborating to compete against Amazon, which is hot competition for search ads for possible business purchases. Amazon has recently ramped up its investment in its advertising platform.
