Naomi Osaka Backs Out of the French Open

Naomi Osaka Backs Out of the French Open

Naomi Osaka has decided to bow out of the French Open, according to NBC News. She withdrew from the tournament yesterday after being threatened with suspension and fined $15,000 for not agreeing to talk to the media.

The 23-year-old said her decision came due to her mental health being threatened. She has suffered from depression since being thrust into the spotlight three years ago when she won the U.S. Open over Serena Williams. Many fans booed her at the time.

“The best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris,” Osaka said in a statement. “I never wanted to be a distraction and accept that my timing was not ideal and my message could have been clearer.”

The president of the French Tennis Federation Gilles Moretton referred to the situation as “unfortunate.” He also said the federation is “sorry and sad for Naomi Osaka.”

She defeated Romania’s Patricia Maria Tig in straight sets on Sunday at the French Open, according to CNN. Osaka, who is ranked No. 2 worldwide, refused to speak to the media after her victory.

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova tweeted yesterday in support of Osaka, saying that athletes are trained to focus on their physical attributes while “perhaps the mental & emotional aspect gets short shrift.” The Women’s Tennis Association said in a statement that mental health is one of the “highest priorities for the WTA.”
