EA Hit by Massive Data Breach

EA Hit by Massive Data Breach

Gaming behemoth Electronic Arts, the publisher of Battlefield, FIFA, and The Sims, is one of the latest victims of hackers who have stolen a wealth of information, including the source code to FIFA 21 and the Frostbite engine, according to Vice. The hackers are now reportedly advertising the stolen data on hacking forums in an attempt to sell it.

“You have full capability of exploiting on all EA services,” the hackers claimed in posts on underground hacking forums, Motherboard reported.

The hackers say they will only entertain offers from well-known members of the hacking community. There have been other big hacks recently in the gaming industry, including CD Projekt Red’s source code for “Cyberpunk 2077” and “The Witcher 3” last February. Nintendo’s source code for several SNES and Nintendo 64 games, including Super Mario Kart and an unreleased Zeld, were hacked in July of last year. With this most recent hack, the hackers insist they also have Microsoft Xbox and Sony’s SDKs and API keys and plan to sell them.

An EA spokesperson said these hackers stole “a limited amount of game source code and related tools,” according to The Verge. However, the hackers were not able to access player data, according to EA.

In addition, the EA spokesperson said it was not a ransomware attack and that the company had beefed up its security after the hack and they do not foresee any effect on games or business. EA is also now working with law enforcement.
