Airbnb to Halt Listings Where Tenants Have Been Evicted

Airbnb to Halt Listings Where Tenants Have Been Evicted

Airbnb will temporarily block landlords from renting properties flagged as new to the market due to a former occupant’s failure to pay rent after the Center for Disease Control’s eviction moratorium ends on June 30, according to Gizmodo.

The policy went into effect yesterday and will remain in place through the end of the year. Airbnb will then consider a possible extension.

“By working with cities to prevent landlords from using our marketplace to profit from removing a vulnerable long-term tenant from their home based on non-payment of rent, we believe we can send a strong message that will help keep people in their homes at this critical time,” Airbnb executives said.

The CDC enacted the moratorium to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. Officials say that many renters who are likely to face eviction will have to move into homeless shelters or other crowded environments.

In a survey conducted this spring, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found that as many as 10.4 million people nationwide are now behind on rent due to the pandemic. Over three million respondents anticipate eviction this summer.

Experts at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau say Black and Hispanic families will be hit hardest by evictions. They are more than twice as likely to face late rent payments compared to white families, according to the Bureau’s March report.
