iOS 15 Apple Wallet to Store Digital State IDs and Driver’s Licenses

iOS 15 Apple Wallet to Store Digital State IDs and Driver’s Licenses

Apple has announced that eight states across the country will soon support iOS 15’s capability to store ID cards and driver’s licenses in the iPhone wallet app, according to The Verge. Those states include: Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah.

“The addition of driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet is an important step in our vision of replacing the physical wallet with a secure and easy-to-use mobile wallet…[Apple is] already in discussions with many more states, as we’re working to offer this nationwide in the future,” Jennifer Bailey, VP of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said in a press release.

Users must first scan their state ID or license with their iPhone camera, and will then “be prompted to complete a series of facial and head movements” for added security, according to company officials. They will also need to provide a selfie that states can use for verification purposes.

After setup is complete, customers will be able to present identification from their Apple watch or iPhone at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints equipped with touchless readers.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske said the process “marks a major milestone by TSA to provide an additional level of convenience for the traveler by enabling more opportunities for touchless TSA airport security screening.”

According to Apple, all forms of identification will be shown digitally via “encrypted communication directly between the device and the identity reader,” so users will not have to unlock or hand their devices to anyone.

The changes are expected to come with iOS 15, which will be introduced later this fall, according to CNET. However, Apple has not yet announced exactly when the policy will take effect in particular states.
