Britney Spears Officially Freed From Conservatorship

Britney Spears Officially Freed From Conservatorship

The conservatorship over Britney Spears’s life and finances has now officially come to an end. On Friday, Judge Brenda Penny terminated the legal arrangement entered into nearly 14 years ago, according to The New York Times.

Spears took to social media to celebrate “the best day” of her life and thank her supporters. “She was crying and laughing at the same time,” a source said. “It was hard for her to understand that it’s over after so many years. She is so grateful for everyone that has helped her.”

“Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy !!! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day !!!! Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen ???? #FreedBritney,” she wrote on Instagram.

The #FreeBritney hashtag has been all over social media since 2018 when Spears began to speak out against the conservatorship, describing it as an “oppressive and controlling tool,” according to The New Yorker. At the time, many fans were convinced that Spears had been committed to a psychiatric hospital agains her will.

Spears’s father Jamie had previously controlled everything from his daughter’s finances to her healthcare and general day-to-day activity. Termination of the conservatorship has given Spears her life back; however, with an estimated net worth of $60 million, her financial assets remain a major point of contention. Spears’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart has subpoenaed her father and former business manager for financial records and materials pertaining to alleged surveillance that occurred during the conservatorship. Following Friday’s ruling, Rosengart pointed out that the implications of Spears’s case extend beyond her particular circumstances, noting, “If this happened to Britney, it can happen to anybody.”
