‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Scores Second Highest Domestic Debut Ever

Sony’s latest Marvel movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home” raked in a whopping $260 million at the U.S. box office over the weekend, making history as the second highest domestic debut of all time, according to Deadline.

It beat the previous record of $257.6 million set by “Avengers: Infinity War.”

“This weekend’s historic ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve,” said Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group CEO and chairman Tom Rothman.

“No Way Home” also ranks as the third highest worldwide opening, earning $340.8 million from 60 international markets. That number does not even include China, which boasts the largest global theatrical market. The movie is approved for release there, but its release date has yet to be announced, according to Business Insider.

The latest Spider-Man installment stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Benedict Cumberbatch. It is already the highest grossing film of both this year and last. No other movies released since the start of the pandemic have even hit $100 million at the U.S. box office in a single weekend, according to Variety.

New York City moviegoers appeared undeterred by the recent spike in COVID infection rates. Theaters there generated the second most revenue behind Los Angeles over the weekend.
