Twitter Permanently Bans Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Personal Account

Twitter has permanently suspended the personal account of Georgia’s GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, according to CNN. The decision came on the heels of a New Year’s Day tweet in which Greene falsely stated that there were “extremely high amounts of Covid vaccine deaths.”

“We permanently suspended the account… (@mtgreenee) for repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy,” a Twitter spokesperson said. “We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy.”

Since the start of the pandemic, Rep. Greene has consistently posted false assertions about Covid-19, spreading misinformation to over 465,000 followers, according to Slate. Her most recent tweet included a chart of unsubstantiated claims from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. It was the last straw for Twitter, which adopted a five-strike Covid-19 misinformation policy last year. Strikes two through four lead to locked accounts, and the fifth results in permanent suspension.

Though Rep. Greene has permanently lost access to her personal Twitter, she will still be able to use the official congressional account @RepMTG.

Greene has accused various social media platforms of attempting to “stop the truth,” despite the fact that many of her posts are themselves far from true. All of the Covid-19 vaccines available nationwide are scientifically proven to be safe and effective.

Greene’s suspension falls nearly one year after Twitter banned former President Donald Trump in the wake of the Capitol riot last January.
