The Savannah Bananas, a Georgia-based baseball team, has raised its national profile thanks to TikTok. The team was founded in 2016 as part of the Coastal Plain League and has seen sold-out crowds every year since, according to CNN. The Bananas, or the “Harlem Globetrotters of Baseball,” as dubbed by fans, now has 2.5 million TikTok followers and counting.

“We exist to make baseball fun, and put fans first,” Jesse Cole, the team’s owner and founder, said. “We challenge the rules and the way we do things on the baseball field. . . It’s a whole baseball circus.”

Cole is credited with the team’s burgeoning popularity and is known for the signature banana-yellow suit he wears while hyping fans up at games.

The Bananas currently comprise two teams – the Coastal Plain League team, which plays college-level baseball during the summer months, and a professional Premiere team that participates in shorter games called”Banana Ball.”

TikTok viewers have been charmed by the players’ on-field jokes and antics, including the dance routines they perform at every game. Disregarding many of baseball’s traditional rules, the Bananas lean into goofiness and prioritize fun, which fans cite as one of the primary reasons for the five-figure ticket wait list.

In the Bananas’ take on the sport, hitters can steal first base, walks are actually sprints, fan-caught foul balls are automatic outs, and each inning is winner take all. Players may not step out of the batter’s box, and no bunts or mound visits are allowed. Games are limited to two hours.
