Supreme Court Officially Overturns Roe v. Wade

The Supreme Court officially overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday, striking down nearly 50 years of legal precedent that assured constitutional protections for abortions, and enabling states to ban abortions outright. The justices voted five-to-four with conservative members leading the charge, including Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Trump appointees Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett, according to NBC News.

“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” Justice Alito wrote in the majority opinion. “The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.”

Recent polls show that the majority of Americans support upholding Roe. In an SSRS survey conducted by CNN last month following the leak of the court’s draft ruling, only 17 percent of respondents said they would be glad to see the precedent overturned.

Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer, and Elena Kagan penned the dissenting opinion.

“With sorrow — for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,” they wrote.

Statistics show that today’s decision will undoubtedly impact women of color more so than any other group, according to the Associated Press. This is especially true since many do not have adequate access to healthcare.

Thirteen states, mainly in the South and Midwest, already have laws in place to crack down on abortion rights now that the official Supreme Court decision has been announced. About six additional states enforce limitations around abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, which is before many women even realize they are pregnant.
