Wordle to Become a Board Game

Wordle to Become a Board Game

The popular daily word puzzle Wordle is soon to become a multi-player board game, according to CNN.

The New York Times, which purchased Wordle in January after the game went viral last fall, is collaborating with Hasbro on the project, dubbed “Wordle: The Party Game.” Hasbro will pay the Times a fee to license the rights to the game.

“At New York Times Games, we’re focused on quality crafted puzzles that everyone can experience together, which is why we’re so excited to team up with Hasbro to bring a fresh new format to the global sensation of Wordle,” New York Times gaming chief Jonathan Knight said.

In one of its most expedient launches to date, Hasbro took less than a year to develop the board game, which will be offered in four different version: classic, fast, timed, and teams. Taking turns as host, each player comes up with a secret five-letter word that, much like the original online version, the others have six attempts to guess. However, this time, players are competing with one another, garnering more points the more rounds it takes to guess the correct word. The winner is the person with the fewest points at the end of the game.

Adam Biehl, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Hasboro Gaming, said the company’s goal is to remain as “authentic to the Wordle experience” as possible “to capture what got consumers really interested in the game.”

Wordle: The Party Game is scheduled to be released to the public on October 1, but is now available for pre-order. It will be sold for $19.99 on Hasbro’s website and at Amazon, Target, and Walmart.
